Duty towards Animals

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

"Reciting Salawath on our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is an activity that will be accepted by Allah, even if we don't have Ikhlas (piety)".

Kindness to Animals. Ants, worms, beasts and men moving with a life are animals. Man, being the noblest of animals, has got a duty towards other animals and that is regulated by the rule of proximity as described in the previous section. Animals have got same characteristics of appetites like men and therefore their natural wants should be supplied by men. In default, sin will be committed according to Islam. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) saw a woman suffering punishment in hell, as she confined a cat and did not allow it food and drink till it died. The sin of a woman was forgiven by Allah as she gave water to a thirsty dog. Good treatment to animals regarding riding, food and drink was always encouraged in the shape of rewards. He said: Verily the Almighty Allah inscribed kindness on everything; so when you slaughter good; you sacrifice, make your sacrifice good. Let everybody sharpen his knife, and give ease to his sacrifice animal. He forbade keeping an animal waiting for slaughter or taking it fore mere sport.

No escape from animal sacrifice. Questions may be asked to why sacrifice of animals was allowed by Islam under such humanitarian laws. Man is best of creation, and everything in the universe is for his service and comforts. Even the heavenly bodies like the sun, moon and star are for men; vegetables, fish and meat supply food to men and beasts of burden help them to go from one country to another. Therefore, the service of men is the goal of lower animals. Do we not sacrifice animals daily? Do we not ride on them? There are innumerate microcosms in water and earth. By drinking we destroy them; and by inhaling and exhaling, we destroy them. Recently science reveals that plants also have got lives. If a plant is cut at the root, the whole plant will die away. Therefore it is impossible for man to live without destroying animals and animal life. Then again, meat is one of the principal foods in cold countries. If they live on vegetables alone, they would live cold like deed men. Thirdly, those nations that are carnivorous are more brave and courageous than those who are herbivorous animals. So, to pluck up the virtue of courage and bravely, meat is essentially necessary. Fourthly, all the religious personalities partook of meat and gave sanction to use it as human food. All these show that sacrifice of animals in some form or other is daily done in our food and that there is no escape out of it.

Animals Praise Allah. In voice of animals, there is praise of Allah. The Holy Quran says: Allah which makes everything speak makes us speak41:21 Q. Do you not see that Allah is He whom do glorify all those who are in the heavens and the earth and the birds with expanded wings. He knows the prayer of each one and its glorification24:41 Q. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) therefore forbade killing animals without necessity and for mere sport, and minimized the horrors of animal slaughter. The Prophet (pbuh) prohibited killing of animals even for medicine when other medicines are available.

Ibn Omar and Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: A woman was punished about a cat which she kept confined till it died of hunger. She did neither give it food, nor set it free that it might eat of the worms of the earth. [1]

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: There is no Muslim who grows a plant or transplants a seed, and then men, birds or beasts eat out of it, but it will not be a Charity for him. Agreed upon it. And in a narration of Muslim from Jaber: And what is stolen there from is a Charity for him.

Ja’ber reported that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: The fire was presented before me and then I saw a woman there in from the Israelites having been punished in respect of a cat belonging to her. She kept it tied up and did neither give it food, nor leave it that it might eat of the worms of the earth till it died of hunger. And I saw Amr-b-A’mer-al-khozayi tearing his entrails in the fire, and he was the first who introduced (the custom of) setting she camels at liberty. [2]

Sahal-b-al-Hanzaliyah reported that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was passing by a camel whose back reached its belly. He said: Fear Allah with regard to these animals. Ride them in health and leave them in health.

- Abu Daud

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: An Ant stung a Prophet from the Prophets, so he ordered the village of Ants (to be burnt); and so it was burnt. Then the Almighty Allah revealed to him; An Ant stung you, so you have burnt a class out of so many classes who glorify Allah!
