THE STAR STUDDED BOX OFFICE TOP 10

It’s the Deepavali stars meeting the Pongal stars at the Box Office this week. We have almost everyone at the box office this week – Vikram, Ajith, Surya, Simbu, Dhanush, Maddy, Cheran & Bharath.

Star studded it is – let’s see who is taking the honors.

The top 10 is a result of research and inputs from theaters across the city on the business each movie has had over the week.

KALLOORI

Cast: Tamanna, Akhil, Balamurugan, Hema

Direction: Balaji Sakthivel

Music: Joshua Sridhar

Production: Shankar

Although he couldn’t repeat the success of Kaadhal, Balaji has managed to receive rave reviews for his Kalloori. Tamanna steals the show among others.

Trade Talk: Kalloori has garnered decent profit.

Public Talk: Down to earth and never seen before portrayal of college life seems to have gone well with the audience.

POLLADHAVAN

Cast: Dhanush, Divya

Direction: Vettrimaran

Music: G V Prakash Kumar

Production: Kathiresan

Much discussed, written, and raved about, Polladhavan is showing signs of slowing down from the charts. Well, it’s been quite a long time, hasn’t it?

Trade Talk: Polladhavan has sent the buyers laughing all the way to the(ir) bank.

Public Talk: Finally Dhanush has figured what works for him.

VEL

Cast: Surya, Asin, Vadivelu, Lakshmi

Direction: Hari

Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Production: M Chintamani

Seasons have come and gone, but, Hari’s formula fare Vel hasn’t yet descended from the charts.

Trade Talk: Hit, they branded it.

Public Talk: But why isn’t Asin in Surya’s next venture?

PIDICHIRUKKU

Cast: Ashok, Visaka, Ganja Karuppu

Direction: Kanagu

Music: Manu Ramesan

Production: Senbagakumar

Pidichirukku could have worked despite having a whole bunch of debutants and lesser known artistes had the director focused on the script that has already been tried-tested-succeeded-and-failed.

Trade Talk: None, whatsoever.

Public Talk: Oh well, there isn’t any either.

VAZHTHUKKAL

Cast: Madhavan, Bhavana

Direction: Seeman

Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Production: T. Shiva

One can’t help but call it a case of Madhavan’s bipolar career disorder after watching the actor carry off his serious role with élan for Evano Oruvan and the dud of a role for Vazhthukal subsequently. May be he prefers to call it a case of doing lighter roles with a history of chocolate romance in his career profile. However, that does not just seem to work with Vazhthukkal, blame it on the outdated script that seems contrived of all the other things.

Trade Talk: With two weeks in theaters and an average opening, Vazhthukkal’s fate is predictable by far.

Public Talk: None so far. None expected.

PAZHANI

Cast: Bharath, Kajal Agarwal, Kushboo

Direction: Perarasu

Music: Srikanth Deva

Production: Sakthi Chidambaram

Bharath’s desperation to shed off his boy-next-door image is an apparent disaster. Perarasu’s mix of sentiments, love, action, and tear-jerking sequences seems to have few takers.

Trade Talk: Dismal. The target B & C centers are also turning out to be being let downs.

Public Talk: Are we seriously ready yet to watch Bharath bashing up dozen burly goons, let alone hurling catchy one-liners at them?

PIRIVOM SANDHIPOM

Cast: Cheran, Sneha, Jeyaram

Direction: Karu Pazhaniappan

Music: Vidyasagar

Production: Gnanam Films

Karu Palaniappan – Cheran team’s tale of celebrating family bonds and values, Pirivom Sandipom, might as well be the only dark horse in the otherwise predictable Pongal race. With a whole bunch of ensemble star cast and Sneha in the lead, Pirivom seems to be catching up among the family audiences.

Trade Talk: With no big stars to bank on, the movie has opened to only average houses. However, positive word of mouth seems to do the rounds that could do wonders for the business.

Public Talk: The turn out is still low and is catching up at the counters.

BILLA

Cast: Ajith, Nayantara, Namitha, Prabhu

Direction: Vishnuvardhan

Music: Yuvanshankar Raja

Production: L.Suresh

With remixes having pronounced the order of the day, Billa has reiterated that old-wine-in-new-bottle scripts can sell with classy presentation tactics. Adding to the fact is that fans can’t seem to get enough of Ajith’s accomplice eye candies Nayanthara and Namitha.

Trade Talk: The only savior of producer’s pennies at the box office, Billa is already declared a hit with 6 weeks in contention and promising returns.

Public Talk: Decent support from the movie-going public has kept Billa’s sustenance intact.

KAALAI

Cast: Silambarasan, Vedhika, Sangeetha, Nila

Direction: Tarun Gopi

Music: G V. Prakash

Production: NIC Arts Chakravarthy

Kaalai clearly reinstated one thing - the super talented Simbhu will be undoing all his abilities if he doesn’t pay attention to the script.

Trade Talk: No great shakes and there is no hope that word of mouth will help, since there is none.

Public Talk: Certain things are better left unsaid, aren’t they?

No. Weeks Completed: 2

No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 84

Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 60 %

Collection over this weekend in Chennai: Rs.10,28,696

Verdict: Below average

BHEEMA

Cast: Vikram, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Raguvaran

Direction: Linguswamy

Music: Harris Jayaraj

Production: A M Rathnam

Vikram’s much-awaited-and-hyped extravaganza proves to be just that. Extravagant. Vikram’s stylish and well crafted one man act seems not to help much either. Not to mention the other pluses Harris Jeyaraj, Lingusamy, Prakash Raj, and of course Trisha haven’t had an impact on fans.

Trade Talk: It’s still much early to write off the movie’s success that had opened to full houses and sustained during the two weeks in its run. Mixed reactions from fans and critics haven’t stopped the cash from coming in.

Public Talk: Songs and only the songs that impeccably capture Vikram – Trisha’s onscreen chemistry for the second time in a row (remember, Saami?).
